Yahoo! Bookmarks
25. October 2006 – 21:08 byToday Yahoo! released the new Yahoo! Bookmarks. New Yahoo! Bookmarks? Yes, there already was one and I have to admit that I was not aware of it until today. Must be due to Yahoo!’s lack of promotion. 
Anyway, the new bookmarks tool looks really good. It has a nice and clean interface with seamless drag and drop of bookmarks to folders which you can watch at the screencast. I think folders are a clever way by Yahoo! to convince “nostalgic” browser bookmarks users to store their favourite links on the web. I know people who are aware of the benefits of bookmarking services but don’t make use of them yet because they are not used to tagging and miss folders. This could change with this new service. Users of My Web will find all their stored bookmarks already there. From My Web people will also remember the possibility to send bookmarks by email or instant messenger to friends.
While this new service is a great way to store bookmarks online it leaves the question open in which direction Yahoo! will go with their bookmarking services. Besides the two mentioned services Yahoo! also own del.icio.us. And I think three bookmarking services owned by one company are probably two services too many.
It is interesting that Yahoo! run a survey about the use of bookmarking tools and especially My Web. I discovered the survey when logging in to My Web today. Seeing the integration of stored bookmarks from My Web in Bookmarks already I think My Web will be a thing of the past. Bookmarks has a slicker and more convenient interface and offers more features. It is just missing the My Contacts feature, similar to Your Network on del.icio.us. It will be interesting to see what will happen to del.icio.us now.
