Google’s Top Searches Not Really Top

It seems like I was a little bit naive to believe Google’s top searches of 2006 were any different to those of its competitors.

Last night Google explained how Bebo became the top search term of 2006. Google did not consider generic searches like maps, dictionary,… and also x-rated searches. Basically they ranked search terms based on how much the popularity of a term grew compared to 2005.

There is nothing wrong with it and it is certainly an interesting approach to illustrate what was hot in 2006. But those were not the top searches. Google should have disclosed the information right when it was published.
