Update: Operator Add-on for Firefox

5. January 2007 – 00:19 by Carsten Pötter

Michael Kaply has updated the excellent Operator add-on for Firefox. Besides other enhancements Michael implemented support for my favourite calendar, 30 Boxes.

Besides some minor complaints the 30 Boxes support works rather good. Though Michael has already mentioned that there are still some issues with 30 Boxes. So for example if I add an entry from Upcoming.org to 30 Boxes using Operator it adds the Edit option to the title of the calendar entry as well. Also the description is missing. While a link to the location is added (it isn’t added in Google Calendar) it (the link) doesn’t work unfortunately.
Admittedly it is a stupid idea to add Upcoming events via Operator because Upcoming has adding feature implemented already but it is good to compare entries.

30 Boxes Here is a screenshot of a 30 Boxes calendar entry.

The upper entry is directly from Upcoming while the second one is by Operator. You can easily spot the differences I have described above, I guess.

Nevertheless Operator is a great add-on and it gives a glimpse of the future of Firefox and web browsers in general. I am pretty sure that microformats will change the way we use browsers and the web.

  2. I’m sure they will. Had to deinstall the operatorextension again though some days ago as it was slowing down my firefox too much. maybe it didn’t work to well together with one of the thousand other extensions I have installed. :|

  3. Yes, that might be true. I have noticed some delay when switching tabs but it’s not a real problem for me.

  4. I’ve fixed the 30 boxes location link in my latest release.

As far as your comment about not needing to use Operator becaues upcoming.org provides the same functionality, I must disagree.

I’ve found in my testing that in many cases Operator does a better job adding to google and yahoo calendars than upcoming.org and eventful.com.

30 Boxes is really the only exception, and honestly it is their fault for having a bad API.

The other advantage to using Operator is that you have one mechanism for adding to your calendar regardless of the site you are on.

That’s true. I didn’t mean not to use Operator. It’s great. :-) Too bad about the 30 Boxes API, though.
