Quickly Create a Social News Site

Social news site coRank has been relaunched yesterday. It is focusing on personal social news sites now.

coRank was first launched in March and was a really good alternative to Digg. Every user had their own personal frontpage which was built on stories submitted by their sources; sources are other users whose opinions and stories you value (also see my article on coRank from April).

Now every user can create their own social news service which is hosted at coRank. You can create a new site within a few minutes: choose a name and description for it, a template, and decide on a few simple settings. Templates can be customised by changing the CSS and HTML of the files (footer, header,…); more files and images can be uploaded as well. If you have a Google AdSense account you can even put ads on your site and monetise it.

I have created IdentitySpace where you can submit stories on identity, OpenID, profile aggregation and other related topics if you fancy. It probably needs some more customisation, though you can quickly make the frontpage; just five votes necessary. ;)

I am not sure if this concept will work for coRank. It probably depends on how many serious sites with a strong user base will be created. Though it is an interesting concept worth checking out and definitely a great alternative to Pligg because users don’t have to host the sites themselves.
