Google Gears: Run Web Applications Offline
31. May 2007 – 16:38 byIn my previous post about Google Reader I have mentioned Google Gears more as a sidenote. Well, it certainly is way more than that.
Google Gears will make it possible to run Google applications offline. Google Reader is probably just the start; what about Google Calendar? That would make sense as well. Though it won’t be just Google applications. There is even an API available which enables other developers to make their applications run offline, too. If you want to get an idea what you can do with Gears just have a look at the Gears’ website, there are some basic examples.
It is quite interesting to see that applications will run on your own computer again and not solely on the internet. I mean, just a few years, even months, ago we have seen everything going online: calendars, to-do lists, core office application like word processors and spreadsheets, and much more. Now those apps come back to our computers and Google is not the only company offering this. Just think of Adobe’s Apollo platform. Considering that people are becoming more mobile world wide those offline/online hybrids just make sense for synching purposes to me, though.
