Free Burma!
4. October 2007 – 06:00 byI guess most of you who read newspapers, news sites on the internet or watching news on tv have read or heard about demonstrations led by Buddhist monks in Burma, now called Myanmar, over the last couple of weeks.
Protests started in August when the military government raised prices for oil by 500%. Those protests have been led by well-known dissidents of the Burmese regime but have been crushed by the military. Though rather soon Buddhist monks revived protests again in September. Once again the government has responded with utmost brutality, detaining protesters, even killing some. The government is intimidating reporters and information has become scarce because internet access has been cut off as well. However there are still reports by eye witnesses and bloggers which document atrocities committed by the military.
Some Italian and German bloggers have started the Free Burma campaign which should help raise awareness of the situation in Burma. The idea is that bloggers write just one blog post today - on Burma. I don’t know if this campaign will help people in Burma but it is certainly a positive sign of solidarity with them. Also I know it’s pretty easy for us Western bloggers who have nothing to fear to write about it but hopefully some people will become more active and get involved with politics, support organisations like Amnesty International,…
